East Fortune Air Show

Today is the East Fortune Airshow and it's off I go for some photos.

I had opted to stay outside of the show this year to get some different images, albeit I know would miss some general shots of the activities other than the flying.

I had heard good things about viewing from Traprain Law, so car duly parked the ascent was undertaken with some effort, though the climb wasn't too long.

My first sight was the Exmoor ponies and that was an unexpected joy.

As things turned out there wasn't too much in the way of aircraft coming over my way, though I can see the attraction if it were busier.

Decided to cut my losses and after the descent headed over to the show area.

As there was less than two hours remaining of the display I thought perhaps a reduced price may be on offer, but sadly that wasn't the case.

So, I found a spot where I could park and caught the tail end of the flying display, then managed a few rewarding photos.

Scottish Airshow 2015 - Prestwick and Ayr

Lovely day for the airshow at Ayr, but a cold wind off the beach made it less comfortable.

Opted to head over to see the aircraft at Prestwick during the lunch break - this proved to be a good move.

Vulcan had her final flight in Scotland as she will no longer be flying after this year.

She had a technical problem which gave us a few concerns but all ended well I'm pleased to say.

Scottish Airshow - Prestwick

Well it's day two of the Scottish Airshow and down I head again to Ayrshire.

As promised the two Lancasters duly arrived in the morning, preceded by two Spitfires.

I headed for the 'mound' where I parted with £2 to park in a rutted piece of waste ground that's normally derelict and free to use.

Meanwhile the local warden was busy preparing tickets for those illegally parked.

Having travelled a fair distance I opted to pay the £10 for the static display, and parted this time with £5 for the parking.

Rather bemused that the organisers were charging £2 extra to buy the tickets online as the norm is to offer a reduction for early purchase on the web. No concessions either which is also unusual for this type of event.

As for the event itself, I'm sorry to say that it was very non photographer friendly. Six foot high fences around a lot of the exhibits was, to me, an unnecessary barrier. It also meant that many parents were putting their children on their shoulders so that they could see, and I appreciate them having to do this, but unfortunately it impacted on what others could see.

As there was no public address system we were kept guessing as to when aircraft were leaving to fly - so all a bit of a lottery.

There wasn't an abundance of aircraft on display but this was expected and hopefully next year will see many more.

Scottish Airshow - Prestwick

I went to Ayr today to view the Scottish Airshow.

This is the first time in many years that Prestwick has hosted such a show, so it was to be expected that not everything would be perfect.

The good news is that flying display was free and the participants put on some fantastic displays. We experienced a few cancellations but that is par for the course for flying events.

What wasn't so good was the lack of toilet facilities at the viewing location. At the break the queue for the public conveniences was extremely long and there were no portaloos to alleviate the congestion.

On departure there was no form of traffic management in evidence.

Pedestrians were left to fend for themselves in trying to cross busy roads.

It took me personally over 1.5 hours to get clear of Ayr in the car which is not an acceptable situation at all.

Overall though the event was successful and I'm confident that if the event is organised again for next year then lessons will be taken on board.
