Fairfield Heritage Centre

After my visit to BAE Systems I popped in to the Fairfield Heritage Centre for another browse.

The staff are extremely warm and welcoming and it's well worth a visit to see the heritage on display.

I'm sure I'll be back for another visit one of these days.

BAE Govan Open Day

Today was the open day for the families of BAE Govan workers.

Thankfully the weather stayed dry for most of the time with just the odd shower.

A good opportunity to see the sheds and how shipbuilding has evolved and changed to the present day facilities.

Fairfield Heritage Centre

Fairfields was a major shipbuilding yard based at Govan in Glasgow.

Here luxurious ocean liners, steamers, and naval ships were built by Clydeside tradesmen for the entire world.

My uncle was a welder in the yard very many years ago.

The original yard has had many different owners and has survived to become one of only two shipyards still in operation on the Clyde today.

BAE Systems now own the yard and shipbuilding continues with naval contracts.

The main office block of the actual Fairfield yard is now separate from the BAE yard and recently underwent a major restoration programme. I hope these images give an idea of how the building looks.

Much credit goes to the volunteers who keep the facility open, and arrange tours and lectures.

A Busy Garvel and James Watt Dock

After yesterday's postponement the Garvel dry dock today saw the MV Finlaggan and the SD Warden exit, and the Burhou I come in for maintenance.

It was a great day and almost looked tropical, and the temperatures were fair giving some warmth in the sunshine.

This was reflected in the number of people who appeared to watch the comings and goings around the docks.

Nice to see as it is their heritage, even though the river is quiet by the standards of yesteryear.
